Common Color Guard Safeguarding Concerns
Abuse and misconduct can happen in all sports, at every level of play. Color Guard has some specific vulnerabilities, such as:
- High levels of involvement in color guard often require time spent away from family at camps or competitions. Since practices, performances, and competitions are held at a variety of venues, it can be hard to identify isolated and other high-risk areas when locations vary and are unfamiliar.
- Color guard competition often involves subjective scoring, deducting from a baseline “perfect” score. Pressure and scrutiny to avoid point deductions can negatively impact self-esteem and confidence, and leave athletes emotionally vulnerable.
- Color guard requires specific equipment. If athletes are not taught how to use this equipment correctly, they may risk injury to themselves and others.
What’s the difference between tough coaching & abuse?
The Coach Athlete Relationship Dynamics Diagrams below can be used as a gut check; consider the conduct you experience and observe in your sporting community, and discern whether what is occurring aligns with a caring and supportive coach-athlete relationship. For athletes who have unhealthy relationship dynamics with their coaches, inappropriate behavior can be subtle and difficult to discern. Awareness and prevention of these patterns of power and control help keep everyone safe.
